The NEC SX-4B, satori, is the current traditional vector-processing support machine at the University of Melbourne. This computer has increased our capacity in this area by about 500%. Vector-processing was one of the earliest forms of supercomputing and still provides the highest performance per cpu. It is suited to all problems where the data is stored and processed in regular cartesian arrays.
satori is a dual cpu machine with 4 GByte of shared memory. Each SX-4 processor contains a vector unit, superscalar unit, scalar cache and memory interface. The vector unit consists of 8 NEC vector pipeline processors each with 32 elements. The crossover between scalar and vector performance is as low as 5 elements in some cases. The peak performance of each Vector Processor is 1.8 GFlops.
